For the past 3 classes we have been presenting our lesson plans for high school math. Overall I would say that my peers, and I, have a pretty good idea of how to engage the students, and think outside the box! There are still a few students that are having trouble with how much material to give the students, and how much time should be allotted. I believe that this will just come with practice. I have been fortunate enough to have had past placements, and many opportunities to teach children, so I have a better understanding of what to expect from them.
The thing that I learned the most from these past 3 classes was how to teach applied students. Although you want these students to have manipulatives, sticking with one or 2 a day would be good so that they don't get too overwhelmed. Another thing is homework! As a teacher, homework is one of those things that allows you to teach as much as you can in class time, and assign individual learning time as a home activity. The problem is that many students (especially applied students) won't do this homework. This leaves the teacher in a bad position because you are assigning it, and no one is doing it.
I think it's important at the end of the day to know your students. If you don't know how they learn, and how efficient they work together, it is impossible to create a classroom that will enhance their learning!
